Hello Everyone. Welcome. In addition to Weekend Writing Warriors and Snippet Sunday, I am also participating in Charity Sunday organized by Lisabet Sarai. Last time, I earned $32.00 for Jose Andres’ World Central Kitchen,. This week, I will pledge $2.00 per comment to WETA, my local PBS station. I think its important to support our public broadcasting system, which provices us programming with strong education contents, especially in a social media world. It is also an important information institution that does an excellent job looking deeply and truthfully at hard issues. Truth is being challenged in our society. And PBS is one way to keep reliable information flowing and provide access to educational programming, especially to those who don’t have easy access to non-public school enrichment activities.

To keep with the theme of truth, I am going to share a scene from my science fiction romance, Race to Redemption. In this scene, our heroine, Lainie Carter (aka Elaina Carteret) is meeting Erik, our hero, and his Assistant Director, Brej. The scene starts with Brej introducing himself.

“Brejon Hykarbi.  Everyone calls me Brej. I’m the Assistant Director. That’s Erik Johansen, the Director. Yes, he’s always that grumpy.” Affection tinged Brej’s tone.

“Lainie Carter.” The new name more familiar each time she used it.  She forced a smile and tried to make it real.

“Ms. Carter,” Erik grunted with a nod in her direction. He even made that sound sexy.  His stare narrowed as if he wanted to let her know he didn’t trust her before he returned to perusing her data on his desk vid.  “We don’t get too many females or zoners flying med transports in the Ranhar. What brings you here?”

His predatory gaze unnerved her.  She struggled to remember her new history even though she had practiced it for weeks so it would flow like the truth. Erik shattered that all in a minute.

She sucked in air until it burned her lungs, then dove in. “I lost my family to the Sin Hole.” A partial truth. “I needed to get off planet.” An absolute truth.

“You were a pilot in the zone for several different tour companies.”

“Touring the zone is a real highlight for the guarded classes. It makes them feel adventurous.”

“You had to be some flyer. They only hire the best.”

“I am.” Her confidence in her piloting skills remained intact, even though she couldn’t fly fast enough to save Devon.

“Yet, you never raced? The tour companies usually hire the zone amateur racers who don’t have the desire or vid cache to make it in the professional DustDromes.”

Who was this guy? He knew more about the zone than most. “No.” The first lie. “I didn’t want to live in Gowan City.” The second lie. “As I said, I lost my family to that place.”

“How did they know you were that good if you didn’t race?”

Race to Redemption Green Rising, Book 1 Burb

Intergalactic storm racing champion, Elaina Carteret, left the circuit in disgrace after a horrendous accident. Willing to deal with the devil, aka her business manager, she accepts a challenge for one last chance to fly again. The deal seemed easy – pose as Lainie Carter, medical transport pilot, and spy on a hospital outpost. Until she meets the director, Dr. Erik Johansen, who runs the station with an iron hand, a permanent scowl and the tightest bod on the planet.

Erik keeps his emotions and laboratories locked up tight. He once trusted a woman who turned out to be a spy—and millions died. When the sizzling hot Lainie Carter sashay’s into his office with her endless legs, pouty mouth and penchant for sneaking into forbidden areas, he knows she’s dangerous. If only she would stop sneaking into his fantasies.

When the outpost is attacked by mercenaries, the Diva and Dr. Dictator are thrown together in a race across the desert to save two sick children. As a fragile trust grows between their damaged hearts, will it be strong enough to survive the truths that threaten their growing bond?
