Welcome to the A to Z Challenge. We are almost finished with the month and the alphabet. I must confess y was the hardest letter for me in the total series. The only dystopian idea, thing or story I could come up with is youth. A number of dystopias envision a world where, for whatever reason, is populated only by young people. Here is a starter list:
- Lord of the Flies, where young boys find themselves stranded and having to survive on an island. Its not pretty.
- Logan’s Run where overpopulation has led to a society where people are required to enter the Carousel when they turn thirty. Limiting age allows them to limit the number of people and the allocation of resources. People enter the Carousel believing that it functions like a lottery and some may actually survive the experience. None do of course.
- Miri, an episode of the original Star Trek, where a disease takes everyone post puberty, so only pre-pubescent teens survive.
- Similar to Miri is the Neflixt series Between where a disease kills everyone over 21.
- Her Dark Materials, which makes clear separations between children and adults. The ghosts in the world between the worlds only kills adults. Similarly, the Daemons and Dust are different with children, then with adults.
What other film fits this mold? Can you think of another y for dystopia?
For fun, here is a photo of Logan’s Run, the tv show. Anyone remember this?
Thanks for dropping and remember to visit other bloggers participating on the A to Z Challenge.
Interesting theme of youth in dystopian work. Lord of the Flies is a classic book and I do like Logan’s Run. There is something about dystopia that seems to look at population control and age together.

Its funny. This was the only thing I could think of, but in the end, I liked this post, and realized it had some oomph.
