Today, I’ve decided to do my second visual overview of dystopias, looking specifically at weather. The friendliness or hostility of the environment has a profound impact on how easy or hard our lives our. While weather itself is not utopia or dystopia, climate change is stoking our fears. Dystopian stories, at their best, should feel too close to home to be comfortable. So here’s a reminder of what we an angry earth can look like.
A storm at sea
A storm in the desert (known as a haboob).
A snow storm
A hurricane making landfall.
And an ice storm.

Great pictures. I looked at weather in my dystopian trilogy today too, making it a character and distinctive in each of the three parts.

Weather is becoming more and more a character in our books. Kind of hard to avoid it.
I’d prefer not to weather any of those storms.
You and me both, but they are a part of our world.
