Hello Everyone. I am pleased to share that my theme for the 2021 A to Z Blogging Challenge will be future dystopia. My existing series, Green Rising, has elements of future dystopia and my work in progress is very definitely one. The blogging challenge gives me an opportunity to explore the topic more fully, and I can use what I learn to deepen the world in my current WIP.
What is a future dystopia?
Its a world in the future that is undesirable to live in, although it may not seem so initially. It is usually marked by the following characteristics:
- An authoritarian government that curtails the rights of its citizens or some of its citizens at the expense of others.
- There are often shadow rulers behind the government that most people are not aware of. These could be power brokers, corporations, an AI or human evil genius, an alien empire, a corrupt bureaucracy or any other configuration.
- People tend to conform to the society, often lacking independent judgement. And they are usually under some kind of surveillance by the powers that be.
- Somewhere there is some type of notion of a perfect society, that the government tries to reinforce and the citizens are supposed to conform to.
- In addition to surveillance, the powers that be use a variety of methods to control the population and keep them conforming to the world order.
Over the month of April, I will be exploring books, movies, events, and concepts that allow us to understand how these worlds work.
Oh, great theme! I’m going to be doing an A-Z guide to my trilogy of books set in a future dystopian world, so it will tie in nicely with yours. Look forward to reading the posts.

Sounds like a great theme. I always like to learn something about literary genre. I’ll admit I’m not a reader of dystopian, but who knows? I may become one 😉
