I can’t believe we are half way through January. Everything seems to be moving so fast. . I’m glad for Sunday and for this week’s Weekend Writing Warriors and Snippet Sundays. Today, I am continuing with The Scent of Memory, Green Rising Book 2, but moving deeper into the story. This scene takes place in the hospital after the starship explodes. Cap did ultimately make it into an escape pod. For background, Elizabeth is the head ER doctor. She is also married to Luke, Marisol’s first boyfriend, a fact that causes tension in her relationship to Marisol. The rescue teams just brought in the first cyborg. Marisol is there because healing cyborgs require doctors and computer programmers.
“Let’s focus on the business at hand,” Elizabeth interrupted, a hint of bitterness in her voice. Her short blond hair teased her shoulders. She leaned over her patient and pushed the glove up. “The number is 1.1.0.9.2.3.4.5.F. Why does that number feel familiar?”
““The eleventh sun cycle, the ninth day of the Terran year 2345—the date the Odin mine shaft collapsed,” Marisol whispered to a now hushed room. The date was tattooed on her heart as indelibly as the numbers on the cyborg’s wrist. Her blood buzzed with adrenaline as she input the numbers. “Okay to remove the helmet. Pull back first to detach the port connection.”
Elizabeth did as instructed. “Dearest god,” Elizabeth gasped, drawing everyone’s attention to the cyborg’s exposed face.

The Scent of Memory Blurb
Twelve years ago, Marisol lost Aren. Now he’s back – pointing a gun at her head and treating her like a stranger.
Rebel hacker, Marisol Martinez, never thought volunteering to keep the hospital safe from cyborgs would lead her back to the man sabotage ripped from her arms. The man she swore to avenge by any means possible.
For over a decade, Cap protected the cyborgs under his command from every danger. Until he meets an insurgent, whose scent wreaks havoc on his control. She calls him Aren and insists she knows him. But she’s wrong. He has no past, no present, no future – only orders he’s programmed to complete.
Forced together, Marisol and Cap can’t resist the passion that keeps building between them. With time running out, Marisol must use her computer skills to restore Aren’s memories or Cap will kill all subversives on the planet – starting with her.
Based on the blurb, I can guess what she discovers when the helmet is removed. Definitely an intriguing snippet!
Maybe yes, maybe no. No spoilers. Thanks for dropping by.
That would be a shock. I am hooked.
Thanks, Gem. Nothing like surprises.
Is it unusual to number a cyborg by a specific date? Or is that when he was “converted”?
The date refers to the time of the “recruitment”, and by inference, the place it happened. It was an organizing tool for cyborg development.
Well, that was a mean place to stop! Great build up of tension in this scene.
I hadn’t even thought of that, to be honest. I was counting lines. But i see it clearly now.
Dramatic moment ahead! I liked the way you built up to this point in the snippet, really terrific.
Thank you and thanks for stopping by.
You stopped in the middle of the big reveal. Like Jessica, I was going to say that inside the helmet was her long long Aren, but maybe not.
Maybe not. Thanks for dropping by.
This book is so good. That was a shocking scene. And she has to be careful how she reacts since she lives on a world where big brother is always watching…
Not nice to leave us with a cliff hanger. 🙂
Sorry. Maybe not. 🙂 Thanks for dropping by.
You did not stop right there. lol I want to know more. Great snippet.
Thanks, and thanks for dropping by.
I’m all in!!! You had me at ‘the date was tattooed on her heart.’
I love that line too.
If it’s who I think, no wonder she’s stunned. Great excerpt!
Thanks. And thanks for dropping by.
I agree that that was a mean place to stop! I can’t wait to see what she sees…
I too thought Aren, but maybe someone who knew him instead?
Wow on the significance on the numbers and that cliffhanger! I really want to know what she saw!
