Thank you for everyone who visited last week for the Long and Short Review Wednesday Blog Hop. And a big thank you to all of those who voted for my book, The Scent of Memory, for The TBR Pile January Book of the Month. It won, so double thank you.

Today we are sharing our thoughts on the most romantic book or movie ever. I’m going to nominate one in each category.

Casablanca is my idea of the most romantic movie ever. Its not an HEA in the classic sense because in the end the guy does not get the girl. Their love is not in doubt, but they sacrifice it for the greater good. There is something so fundamental about that. Those shared values, which are based in love, contribute to the overall beauty of the world. Their love is bigger then they are. It starts out as selfish, but the power of it expands beyond them. When Ilsa breaks Rick’s heart, he turns inward. When he finds her again, understands why she left, he returns to the world again, even if that return is without her. Perhaps, that what true love really is–something that makes us more than we are, something that is as painful as it is beautiful, because of how much it pushes us to test our boundaries and our limits. It is the strength of that love which allows the sacrifice.

Pride and Prejudice gets my vote for most romantic book. How Lizzie and Darcy move through their weaknesses to find each other is so very, very real. Its not love at first sight. Quite the opposite. But love requires us to work through our own weaknesses and assumptions before we can find the truth in ourselves and in our loves. Romantic love is entrancing and its hard work. And it has to be both as Jane Austen reminds us or we are vulnerable to the Wickhams and the Lydias of the world–who focus on the romance, status and gain but do not truly see what love is.
