Happy Spring and welcome to the Spring into Reading Blog Hop. The list of other blog hop authors and the giveaway details are further down in the post.
I have this theory, that we are drawn to books at certain times in our lives, because they are exactly what we need at that moment. So when when my mother was cleaning out her house several years ago handed me a few piles of books that she enjoyed, I took them, put them on my shelf, and forget about them.
A few months ago, I did the book wander. When I don’t know what I want to read, I just pool piles of unread books in front of me and go through them. I do this everywhere–home, libraries, bookstores. I selected Shutter Island by Dennis Lehane from my mom’s pile. I have no idea why I picked it because I usually veer away from anything with insane asylums. Just not my thing. But I trusted my gut and my theory, and went with it.
I loved it. His writing is poetry, and he delivers an emotional punch with every paragraph, often every line. I bought the movie (and I hate movies about insane asylums even more than I hate books about them), and kept going. I’m reading Mystic River now. Its so emotion-laden, I have to read it in small doses not long hauls. I’ll be sipping it for awhile, like an aged scotch, that demands to be enjoyed slowly.
Why is it the right book at the right time? And why am I discussing it on a romance blog hop. Because deepening the emotional impact of my own writing is a personal goal. And Lehane’s books are a great place to learn from. His characters love in a nuanced way, and its glorious. And so my spring wish list will be more Lehane, a few Nordic mystery writers (Jo Nesbo, Helene Tursten, Arnaldur Indradasin) and am counting the days until Nalini Singh’s Silver Silence releases. and J.R. Ward’s The Chosen releases this month (at least that waiting is over).
A now for my giveaway. I’m giving away either a mystery swag pack (book related of course) or an e-swag pack if the winner lives outside the US for one person, chosen at random, who signs up for my newsletter.
Happy reading. Visit the other bloggers on the hop here.
Here’s my latest release if you are looking for a sexy science fiction romance for your spring reading list.
Race to Redemption Blurb
A woman who lost everything.
Intergalactic storm racing champion Elaina Carteret had it all – fame, wealth, men – until a horrific accident took it away. To get it back, she agrees to pose as Lainie Carter, medical transport pilot and corporate spy. Her risk-taking attitude infuriates Dr. Erik Johansen, who runs the outpost with an iron hand, a permanent scowl and the tightest bod on the planet.
A man desperate for redemption.
Unable to forgive himself for a past tragedy, Erik works himself into an early grave. He has no patience for the insubordinate Lainie Carter, who can’t take an order, disrupts routine and flames his body to ash.
A planet at risk.
When the outpost is attached, they’re thrown together in a race across the desert to stop a deadly biogenetic weapon As a fragile trust blossoms between two damaged hearts, their pasts resurface and threaten their growing bond.
Be warned: Heat level 5, gender neutral and bi-gendered characters.
I love your title!
Thanks. And thanks for participating in the hop.
The cover of your book is gorgeous! And hot, hot, hot! I don’t read much concerning space unless it’s non-fiction but that just demands to be read! Heat level 5 is a bit more than I can normally handle, but I may have to try. Synopsis sounds great.
Thanks for the giveaway. I also have not read Shutter Island, and for the same reasons. Sounds like I may have to pick that one up as well.
Thanks, Christina. If it helps, most of the five level comes in the chapters from the antagonist’s POV. Although I didn’t plan on it, those chapters came out very sexual. Those could easily be flipped over.
