Hello Everyone,

Welcome back to the Insecure Writer’s Support Group, which has a monthly blog hop on everything related to writing.   This month we are discussing our experience with Nano, which is a yearly event in which writers commit to writing 50,000 words in the month of November.

I would love to Nano. I would love to write 50,000 words in a month. That is not my life.  If my wish is to be a full-time writer, my reality does not reflect that wish.  My full-time job has gotten more demanding as I’ve gotten more successful at it. Ironically, sole parenting a teen-ager is somehow more demanding even thought they live behind the closed doors of their room, can stay alone, and take public transportation to places. Emotionally, they are needy soles who rebel against that neediness. Add in community and familial obligations, and writing becomes something I do regularly but not in large chunks of time nor large chunks of word count.

And November is the most demanding month of all.

Its our annual conference at work, the biggest event of the year, and Thanksgiving we head south to Mom’s, which eats into, not opens up, free time.  So Nano has never really been an option.  I’ve tried to the do summer camps and the April short forms, but given all the above, I really can only work to my own timetables.  I’m not complaining, my life is a good one, rich with mission and purpose, but it also means I don’t get everything I want.  But then, who does?

Maybe one day I’ll take on Nano. Probably after high school. Its a goal to aspire to. Goals are good. Even if its 5,000 words a month, rather than 50,000.

Anyone other Nano wannabes, but life has other plans for you at the moment?

  • NaNo isn’t for everyone. We each find what works best for us. Some people enjoy the pressure of writing X number of words per day without stopping to go back and fix something. I can’t do that. The OCD in me won’t let me leave something unfinished. But other writers have been very successful at it. Whatever works is my motto. 🙂
