Imagine hearing the call of the drums in your ear every minute of every day of your immortal life?

That is the curse of the Master, Dr. Who's Time Lord Antagonist. The sound drove him mad. In his (later her when he is regenerated as Missy or Mistress) insanity, he aims for galaxy-wide domination, starting with planet Earth.

The Doctor, to his credit, never really gives up on the only other Time Lord left in existence, even if the are doomed to battle for eternity. Its the Master who reminds us just how lonely the Doctor is, and the thin line between sanity and madness that keeps the Doctor with us. The Master is the Doctor slipped over that line. And its why he (later she) is the ultimate antagonist--more so than Daleks and Cyberman who are the monsters under the bed, the mindless swarms that never stop coming, and weapons that never stop blasting.

The Master is one of us. We know why he crossed the line, we know how alone he is, we know but for the drums that might have been us.

  1. I think if you're the only two of your kind left, you're going to cling onto some small hope that you'll be able to bring the other one back around to the right side, one way or another. Cait @ Click's Clan

You certainly are. That's why he's my favorite villain in the Who verse.
  2. The Master is a great character. You feel for him and want the Doctor to redeem him, but I doubt that's possible. I also loved his regression in to Missy. That actress made her brilliant. ~Patricia Lynne aka Patricia Josephine~ Story Dam Patricia Lynne, Indie Author

I loved the move from Master to Missy. I never saw it coming, and I'm pretty good at guessing. I don't think he/she is redeemable either, but I weep for the Doctor when he tries.
  3. I'm just glad I haven't lost my sanity through the a to z chuckle Dropping in and I'll have you on my 'list'....so see you again :)
