Khan, the Family Man #AtoZChallenge

Benedict Cumberbatch’s Khan in Star Trek Into Darkness is one of my all time favorite villains. He  is convinced of the rightness of his superiority (he's genetically engineered to be a super dictator).  As ruthless as he is, he had my heart clenching in my chest when he admitted his commitment to his crew. Remember this line?

My crew is my family, Kirk. Is there anything you would not do for your family?

A family man, but also a cold-blooded ruthless psychopath. Who didn’t shiver when he said to Spock,

I will target your life support systems located behind the aft nacelle. And after every single person aboard your ship suffocates, I will walk over your cold corpses to recover my people.

Gotta love him. So, when I write villains, Khan is what I aspire to create.

So Benedict Cumberbatch or Ricardo Montalban?

  1. I haven't been up to speed with the new Star Trek movies, but I like a villain with some kind of redeeming feature, like Khan's loyalty to his crew. It's not that easy then to totally hate them!

That's the idea. I think Star Trek and Science Fiction more generally does this pretty well, because we have to learn how to assess alien cultures.
